The Slope Formula
Slope measures how steep a line is - how much y changes for every unit of change in x. A positive slope rises left to right, a negative slope falls left to right, a slope of 0 is a flat horizontal line, and a vertical line has an undefined slope.
m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁
From Slope to Line Equation
Once the slope is known, the line's equation in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b) can be found by substituting one of the points and solving for b, the y-intercept. This calculator also converts the slope into an angle of incline (in degrees) using the arctangent function.
