Rounding Rules
Standard rounding looks at the digit right after the place you're rounding to: if it's 5 or higher, the last kept digit goes up by one; if it's below 5, the last kept digit stays the same. This calculator also shows you the "round down" (truncate/floor) and "round up" (ceiling) results, since some situations - like billing or measurements - call for always rounding in one direction rather than to the nearest value.
Rounding to a Multiple
Rounding to the nearest multiple (e.g. nearest 5, nearest 50, nearest 0.25) works the same way but compares the number to the nearest multiples above and below it, rather than to individual decimal digits - useful for prices, time increments, or measurements that only come in fixed steps.
