What Is an Nth Root?

The nth root of a number x is the value that, when multiplied by itself n times, gives back x. The square root (n=2) and cube root (n=3) are the most common, but the same idea extends to any positive whole number n. Roots and exponents are inverses of each other - taking the nth root is the same as raising a number to the power 1/n.

n√x = x1n

A Note on Negative Numbers

Even roots (square root, 4th root, etc.) of a negative number have no real-number result - the calculator will flag this case. Odd roots (cube root, 5th root, etc.) of a negative number do have a real result and will be shown as negative.
