Simplifying Ratios

A ratio compares two quantities. To simplify A:B, both numbers are divided by their greatest common factor, the same way a fraction is reduced - 12:18 simplifies to 2:3 because 6 is the largest number that divides both evenly.

Solving Proportions

A proportion states that two ratios are equal, like A:B = C:D. If three of the four values are known, the fourth can be found by cross-multiplying: A × D = B × C, then solving for the unknown.
