About the Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal body weight formulas give a rough target weight for your height, originally developed to help estimate medication dosing but commonly used as a general fitness reference.

Formula Used

Men: Ideal Weight = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60) Women: Ideal Weight = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches - 60)

How It Works

This calculator uses the Devine formula, which starts from a base weight for 5 feet of height and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that.

Step by Step

  1. Convert your height from centimetres to inches (divide by 2.54).
  2. Subtract 60 from the height in inches.
  3. Multiply by 2.3 and add the base weight for your gender (50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women).

Worked Example

Example: A woman, 165 cm tall (65 inches):

Ideal Weight = 45.5 + 2.3 × (65-60) = 45.5 + 11.5 = 57 kg

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Devine formula the only method?

No, other common formulas include Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi, which give slightly different results but follow the same general logic.

Should I aim exactly for this number?

Think of it as a reasonable target range rather than an exact goal - factors like muscle mass and frame size matter too.

Does this account for muscle mass?

No, these formulas are based purely on height and do not distinguish between muscle and fat.
