How Fraction Arithmetic Works
To add or subtract fractions, they first need a common denominator; each fraction is scaled so both share it, then the numerators are added or subtracted directly. To multiply fractions, you simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide by a fraction, you multiply by its reciprocal (flip the numerator and denominator of the second fraction). Whatever the operation, the final answer is reduced to its simplest form by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
