Factors vs. Prime Factorization

A factor of a number is any whole number that divides into it with no remainder. Every number has at least two factors, 1 and itself. Prime factorization breaks the number down further, into the unique combination of prime numbers that multiply together to produce it - for example, 360 = 2³ × 3² × 5.

Why This Matters

Factoring is the basis for simplifying fractions, finding the greatest common factor and least common multiple of two numbers, and factoring algebraic expressions in algebra.
